Questions & Answers
(Drawn from the Ismaili Gnosi article)
1. How can spiritual seekers tame their carnal soul and lower instincts?
To tame the carnal soul (nafs-i ammarah) and lower instincts, the source lays out a multifaceted approach combining self-awareness, active inner dialogue, devotional practice, community, and esoteric self-sacrifice:
Acknowledge Imperfections and Reflect Honestly: The path begins by acknowledging human limitations rather than claiming perfection. When mistakes occur, seekers are encouraged to reflect honestly with humility and self-compassion, turning “slips” into opportunities for recentering and renewed effort.
Confront the Lower Self through Direct Inner Dialogue: Rather than suppressing disturbing thoughts or blindly obeying impulses, seekers should step back, observe where thoughts originate, and expose the deception of the lower self[. ‘Allamah Hunzai highlights the power of directly “calling out” the carnal soul, reminding it of its role as an inner enemy and recognizing the spiritual losses it inflicts — such as the loss of wisdom, illumination, and didar (beatific vision).
Prioritize Intellect and Remembrance (Zikr): Seekers must use intellect to govern base desires. According to a Prophetic tradition, one whose intellect dominates sensuality ranks higher than the angels, whereas succumbing to sensuality lowers a person below beasts. Anchoring the mind to the “staff of zikr“ (remembrance) and the love of the Imam helps keep the heart centered on spiritual elevation.
Cultivate Supplication (Giryah-o-Zari) and Softness of Heart: Because the carnal soul constantly seeks to overshadow the inner life, seekers require giryah-o-zari (deep weeping and lamentation in supplication) to soften the heart and invite divine assistance.
Seek Strength in Spiritual Gatherings: Participating in spiritual gatherings (majalis) provides fellowship and collective spiritual strength, enabling acts of devotion that are often more difficult to sustain in isolation.
Put Knowledge into Active Practice: Simply collecting, reading, or quoting spiritual literature without implementing its counsel is ineffective. Spiritual growth demands the practical discipline of putting guidance into daily action[.
Commit to Private Spiritual Retreat (Itikaf): Seekers can make a firm, quiet resolve to undertake an itikaf (spiritual retreat) in secret — avoiding ostentation or showing off — to focus purely on piety and spiritual progress.
Slay Lower Instincts Through Divine Love: Overcoming the lower self requires recognizing that base desires are like a “wild beast” or “snake” that must not be fed. Because the lower self is deeply intertwined with egoistic identity, subduing it is a form of self-sacrifice: slaying base desires with the “dagger of love” — devotion and adoration for the true Beloved, the Imam of
2. What are the consequences of following one's carnal soul?
According to ‘Allamah Hunzai, heeding the whispers of the carnal soul (nafs-i ammarah) results in severe spiritual losses and devastating inner consequences:
Deception, Remorse, and Darkness: Yielding to the lower self yields nothing except deception, remorse, and spiritual darkness.
Humiliation through Servitude: Spending one’s life in servitude to the carnal soul causes the seeker to become humiliated.
Deprivation of Wisdom, Spirituality, and Didar: Following the lower self deprives the seeker of knowledge, wisdom, spirituality, and didar (the beatific vision). It also causes the honor of the Hereafter, the joy of religion, and the treasures of knowledge to slip away.
Loss of the Everlasting Kingdom and Union: The extent of this loss is so great that an “everlasting kingdom” slips from the seeker’s hands, making spiritual union with God impossible.
Halt of Spiritual Work and Illumination: Succumbing to this inner enemy incurs divine displeasure operating as a law of spiritual cause and effect: one’s spiritual work comes to a halt, illumination does not come, and the chain of remembrance (zikr) is repeatedly broken.
Hardening and Overshadowing of the Heart: Enslavement to the carnal soul prevents the heart from softening or preserving its softness, giving the inner enemy the opportunity to overshadow the seeker’s entire being.
3. How does personal resurrection relate to spiritual success?
In the source material, personal resurrection refers to an inner, esoteric resurrection that takes place within this life when a seeker subdues the lower ego and allows the higher, divine soul to emerge[. It marks the transition from basic religious adherence to the ultimate goal of spiritual success: complete spiritual union and gnosis (ma‘rifah).
Personal resurrection relates to spiritual success through several key dimensions:
Achieved Through Esoteric Death: True spiritual success requires an “esoteric death while still alive” — slaying the carnal soul (nafs-i ammarah) with the “dagger of love”. Subduing the lower instincts is treated as a literal “sacrifice of the self,” clearing the path for personal resurrection.
The Progression of the Soul’s Transformation:
The Censuring Soul (Nafs-i Lawwamah): When the commanding carnal soul is subdued, it transforms into the censuring soul. The text points out that God swears by the ‘censuring soul’ alongside the Day of Resurrection (Qur’an 75:1–2), as this stage undergoes the spiritual death that triggers resurrection in this life.
The Satisfied Soul (Nafs-i Mutma’innah): Tied to all levels of personal resurrection, the soul ultimately reaches the station of the “satisfied soul” (Qur’an 89:27–30)—a perfect ‘arif (gnostic) who beholds sublime spiritual realities and achieves union with the Lord.
Ascension to Meta-Angelic Heights: By sacrificing base desires, the seeker frees the intellect from sensuality. This personal resurrection allows the higher, angelic soul to emerge, elevating the human wayfarer to a spiritual rank higher than that of the angels.
Fulfilling the Goal of the Spiritual Master: Personal resurrection represents the ultimate fruit of the seeker’s journey and serves as the true response to the Imam’s selfless dedication and sacrifice for his community. Achieving this state of illumination brings immense joy to the spiritual master — a happiness described by the 49th Imam as “enormous — as big as the universe”.
4. Should attaining God's forgiveness for our sins be the main goal of a spiritual seeker?
No — merely attaining God’s forgiveness for sins should not be the main or ultimate goal of a spiritual seeker.
While humble repentance (tawbah) and seeking divine mercy are essential parts of the spiritual path and critical to elevating the humble soul, the text emphasizes that forgiveness alone is not the final destination.
Instead, the source lays out what higher spiritual aspiration entails:
Seeking Spiritual Union: While God easily forgives mistakes out of His mercy, wayfarers who long for true fulfillment aim for complete spiritual union with their Beloved.
Attaining the Satisfied Soul (Nafs-i Mutma’innah): The ultimate objective is for the soul to undergo inner transformation and resurrection, rising to become the “satisfied soul” that returns to God well-pleased and well-pleasing[.
Doing “Whatever It Takes”: Reaching this ultimate destination requires going beyond basic repentance to actively tame the lower self, sacrifice base desires, and discipline the carnal soul.
5. Why does Rumi warn against feeding milk to a snake?
In Rumi’s spiritual teaching, feeding milk to a snake serves as a vivid metaphor for nurturing and gratifying the base desires of the carnal soul (nafs-i ammarah).
Specifically, the source highlights Rumi’s warning for several key reasons:
Indulgence Strengthens the Lower Ego: Feeding the carnal soul by constantly satisfying its base, animalistic desires causes it to grow stronger and more formidable over time.
The “Snake” Transforms into a Devouring “Dragon”: Rumi warns: “You are now feeding milk to this ugly snake. Beware! It will become a dragon, for it is a man-eater by nature”. What may initially seem like a small or harmless impulse turns into a ravenous inner beast if it is continually fed[.
It Destroys Spiritual Growth: Because the carnal soul is inherently predatory, catering to its demands allows it to eventually devour the seeker’s spiritual awareness, wisdom, and inner illumination.
6. What does the Prophet say about man’s place among the rest of creation?
According to the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad⁽ˢ⁾ cited in the article, human beings occupy a unique, dynamic position between two distinct realms of creation—the angels and the beasts:
The Angels: Created with intellect alone, devoid of sensuality.
The Beasts: Created with sensuality alone, devoid of intellect.
Human Beings (Children of Adam): Endowed with both intellect and sensuality.
Because humans contain both faculties, man does not possess a fixed or static rank in creation; rather, a person’s ultimate standing depends on which quality governs their life[:
Rising Above Angels: When a person’s intellect dominates their sensuality, they elevate their lower nature and achieve a spiritual rank higher than the angels.
Falling Below Beasts: When a person’s sensuality dominates their intellect, they degrade themselves and sink lower than the beasts.
By subduing base desires through self-sacrifice and spiritual discipline, a seeker enables the higher, angelic soul to emerge and ascend toward this exalted “meta-angelic” rank.
7. How do the sacrifices of the Imam inspire seekers?
The selfless dedication and lifetime sacrifices of the Imam serve as a profound inspiration and model for the seeker’s own inner path:
Eliciting a Reciprocal Response of Self-Sacrifice: The Imam dedicates his time, thoughts, and life to the spiritual and worldly upliftment of his followers. In turn, the seeker’s struggle to subdue their lower self (nafs-i ammarah) is viewed as a direct response to the Murshid’s sacrifice — a commitment to strive to become what the Imam has dedicated his life to helping them achieve.
Moving Beyond Verbal Gratitude: Although the Imam fulfills his divinely appointed responsibility without requiring gratitude, seekers are inspired to offer a “living expression of gratitude”. Rather than expressing thanks merely in words, seekers demonstrate through their actions that the Imam’s guidance, prayers, and tireless service have taken root within their souls.
Bringing Joy to the Spiritual Master: Knowing that spiritual progress and inner illumination bring immense happiness to the Imam — a happiness described by the 49th Imam as “enormous — as big as the universe”—motivates seekers to discipline their carnal soul and strive to make their Saviour proud.
Demonstrating the Fruits of His Lifework: By overcoming base desires and cultivating their higher angelic nature, seekers offer tangible evidence that the Imam’s selfless service and sacrifices have borne genuine fruit in their spiritual elevation.
