Groblog: Analyzing the attack on Syed Irfan Habib by BJP supporters in Delhi University

I asked Grok on the nature of controversy around the work of Syed Irfan Habib in the wake of ABVP attack on him during a SAMTA festival organised by AISA in Delhi University and found the following:

Syed Irfan Habib (often referred to as S. Irfan Habib, born 1953) is an Indian historian specializing in the history of science, modern political history, and related areas. He formerly held the Abul Kalam Azad Chair at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) and has written on topics like Maulana Azad's life, science in colonial India, and secularism. He is distinct from the more prominent medieval historian Irfan Habib (his senior colleague/relative at Aligarh Muslim University, known for Mughal history and Marxist approaches), though the two are sometimes confused in discussions.

The controversies surrounding Syed Irfan Habib's work primarily stem from his public intellectual role, writings on secularism, liberalism within Muslim communities, and critiques of religious extremism (both Hindutva and Islamist). His positions often place him in polarizing debates in India's socio-political landscape.Key points of controversy include:
  • Critique of Hindutva and communal narratives — Like many secular/left-leaning historians, he has been accused by right-wing critics of being biased against Hinduism or downplaying certain historical aspects to favor "secular" or "pro-Muslim" interpretations. He has written about the shrinking space for liberal voices amid rising Hindutva, describing liberal Muslims as "sandwiched" between extremists from both sides (Hindutva groups and hardline elements within Muslim communities). This draws ire from Hindutva supporters who view such critiques as anti-Hindu or politically motivated.
  • Positions on Muslim community issues — In pieces like his Frontline article "On a Knife’s Edge," he discusses the dilemmas faced by liberal Muslims in raising concerns within their community amid external hatred. Some critics (from various sides) see this as either too critical of Muslim conservatism or insufficiently aligned with community demands.
  • Incidents of public confrontation and attacks — He has faced physical disruptions, such as an alleged attack (water thrown) during a speaking event at Delhi University (People's Lit Festival), linked to his views. These incidents highlight how his secular, anti-extremist stance provokes backlash from certain groups.
  • Association with broader historical debates — While his own work focuses more on modern history and science, he is sometimes lumped with "leftist" or "Marxist" historians (including the other Irfan Habib) accused by critics of distorting Indian history to emphasize Mughal/Islamic contributions or downplay invasions/temple destruction. Right-wing voices on platforms like X have called for harsh measures against such historians, viewing their scholarship as ideologically driven.
Overall, the controversies are less about specific factual errors in his scholarship and more about his outspoken secular/liberal positions in a polarized environment, where he critiques both Hindutva and religious orthodoxy within minority communities. This has made him a target for right-wing criticism while earning support from secular and left-leaning circles. His work is generally respected in academic circles for its focus on science history and figures like Maulana Azad, but public perception varies sharply along ideological lines.
Analysis
Writing from the perspective of acceptance of the living kalki, the messiah ,the sanatan karta of the family of Adam AS and Hawwa AS, I find that all those referred to as either Right wing or those referred to as Hindutva supporters need to be informed on the unbroken chain of the living kalki at the seat of Adam AS.
So, when Tamso ma jyotirgamah is sung ,this is the prayer of Yehdi elannon min dhulmaat which is being sung. When faith in vasudhaiv kutumbkum unity is asserted in Malaysia on the occassion of the visit of Indian Prime Minister , it is the Islamic ideal of humanity being one family born from one soul which is being affirmed. However, one need to know whether these commons are known to all other than me? Is this known to you? You may please comment.
Imam Abraham known as Guru Brahmma is accepted by all, but this is known clear to all not knowing the difference between a Jain and a sanatan dharmik person praying for guidance from the Light of Allah. Jains are speaking against the extant sanatan dharmik /islami cattle practice. Do all BJP supported or those who are describing themselves as sanatan dharmik know that Imam Abraham known as Guru Brahmma destroyed stone idols. This is the reason, Brahmins presiding over birth, marriage and death rites are not using stone idols ,but they are praying for guidance from the Light of Allah whom muslimeen and muslimaat salute from across the masjids ,homes, mazaars, maqbaras, farms, factories ,schools, colleges, madarsas and universities. This needs to be known to be BJP supporters, but this knowledge is not yet common.
